Brief History of Our Alma Mater
In 1924, with Father O’Toole as OHR Pastor, ground was broken for the
school at 87 Pine Street, between Grove Street and Ocean Avenue.
Dedicated in that same year, the cornerstone of Holy Redeemer School is
still visible in the northwest corner of the building. The school officially
opened in 1925 with faculty consisting of the Sisters of St. Dominic from
Amityville. Before any convent was available to them, the Sisters started
out living in the upper front portion of the school building. Finally, in 1926,
the Sisters of St. Dominic moved in to their new Convent, a refurbished
cottage adjacent to the school building, at 95 Pine Street. After 70 years of
service to the Freeport Community and beyond, Our Holy Redeemer
School officially closed it doors due to declining enrollment. The financial
burden became too heavy for those who subsidized the school so OHR
Pastor, Father Rick Figliozzi, made the decision to close the school.
Today, the school building serves OHR parish in a variety of ways. The
DeLaSalle School currently makes its home at OHR. Freeport Public
Schools even used the building for a short time as well. Several parish
ministries and organizations have their
meetings among the many large
rooms. The auditorium and cafeteria
(now known as Sumner Hall after
Joe Sumner) are often
used for dinners, parties, workshops,
performances and much more.
70 Years of Service
Our Holy Redeemer
School and the Sisters of
St. Dominic provided their
students with an education
beyond simple academics.
Graduates of OHR left its
halls well prepared for life,
both academically and
spiritually. It was here that
the moral lessons that we
learned from our parents
at home were reinforced
and enhanced on a daily
basis by the Good Sisters.
Our relationship with our
Savior was strengthened
here and our lives have
been changed forever. We
